Welcome to Sarah Burnell School of dance, offering classes in Modern Theatre, Jazz and Tap

Background Information

The school was first established in 2001 by Sarah Burnell.  She is a fully qualified teacher with I.S.T.D (Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing) and has worked extensively in dance, theatre and choreography. She has also taught drama and was a member of The National Youth Music Theatre UK.

Jazz, Tap, Modern DanceThe school is based in the Pencoed area. Its main aim is to offer students the opportunity to learn in a happy and exciting environment. Classes are offered in Modern Theatre, Jazz and Tap. Students are taken from 3 years and upwards with boys and girls both welcome! Adult classes are also offered in jazz and tap. Students are encouraged to take examinations with the I.S.T.D. (Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing) however, this is not compulsory. Major vocational examinations also studied. The school boasts a 100% pass rate.

The school also takes part in many festivals and shows. Results in recent years have shown what exceptional standards the school’s students have achieved.

Achievements

  • 100% pass rate in children’s grades and vocational grades
  • Success at the All England Dance Finals both at regional and national finals
  • Results at The Swansea Dance Festival, held February 2007. Included first place for the Junior Modern Group, Senior Modern Group, Senior Tap Group, Senior Song & Dance Group.

  • Student Liam Riddick (Aged 17) has been offered a full time place to study Contemporary Dance at “The Place”, London. This talented young dancer is also a member of Diversion’s Senior Associates. At last years All England Finals he was placed in the top 3 in the UK. He also won the Welsh Dance Festival (Senior Trophy) in July 2006.
  • Student Alyn Hawke (aged 17) has been offered a full scholarship to study Musical Theatre at Arts Educational, London. He also made it to the final 50 in BBC1’s “Any Dream Will Do”.
  • Good luck to all those students taking part in this June’s Regional Final of the All England Dance Competition.

Shows & Charity Performances

Fund raising performances for good causes have always been important to the school, recent examples of such shows include:

  • 5th March 2005, Bridgend Recreation Centre, Performance in aid of Nail Patella Syndrome.
  • 4th March 2006, the Grand Pavilion Porthcawl, “Let’s Entertain You”
  • 3rd March 2007, the Grand Pavilion Porthcawl, “Let’s Face the Music and Dance” proceeds in aid of the Multiple Sclerosis Society.
  • Saturday 8th March 2008, the Grand Pavilion Porthcawl, "Dancing on the Ceiling".
